There’s magic in every song …  not the song itself, but in what you bring to the song when you hear it, when you LISTEN.

Old Age Found Me

THE ONLY WISDOM WE CAN HOPE TO ACQUIRE IS THE WISDOM OF HUMILITY: HUMILITY IS ENDLESS. T.S ELIOT. EAST COKER II

There are many phases of life. Some, like childhood, we all have known.  Others, such as parenting and marriage, are less common.  There is one humbling phase of life which, under the best of circumstances, we will all experience.

Old age found me, came to take me for a ride.

Pulled up in a long grey bus and said “Sir, would you get inside.”

I begged indulgence, said,

 “Might your manifest be wrong?”

He said “OH NO, NO sir, it’s time for you to get on,

You see that bus right behind me,

That mean black ugly hearse,

You might not like riding my bus,

But his’ll be worse.”

Old age found me, came to take me for a ride.

So with some trepidation, I stepped on board.

Settled in among the din of a large but friendly hoard.
Not that long thereafter, a steward happened by.

He said, “would you like a cup of wisdom and some humble pie?”

I hadn’t had taste for either but said yes to be polite.

Now I take them every day, not always with delight.

Old age found me, came to take me for a ride.

Now I know it isn’t heaven, but at least it isn’t hell,

And I still have my sense of humor, as best as I can tell.
I have a little wisdom and a lot to be humble for,

I have a bit of loving left, but not much more.

Yes

Old age found me, came to take me for a ride.

I thought I might outrun him, but I knew I couldn’t hide.

I’ve got this clock ticking inside mercilessly.

Be that as it may, it’s not the end of me.

I have many, many, many things yet to do in my life,

People to see, places to be, all with my lovely wife.

But

Old age found me, came to take me for a ride.
